Description

This position is the primary caregiver and overseer of 130+ Holstein cows. Responsibilities include the milking herd, dry cows, breeding, maternity and calves. The position collaborates with the Director of Farm Operations to address problem areas and opportunities for growth and improvement, while maintaining the highest quality milk possible for the customer.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Herd Management
Observe and monitor herd health, assess and treat animals daily. Maintains comprehensive records.
Meets or exceeds milk production goals.
Responsible for breeding, heat detection, reproduction cycles.
Supervise the calf feeding & milking processes, ensuring standards are met.
Monitor cleaning of parlor & barns.
Monitor compliance with all State regulations including movement of animals across state lines. Complete testing when needed.
Oversee the purchase of medicines and supplies needed for proper animal care. Works closely with the veterinarian.
Collaborate with Nutritionist to determine and implement best practices for adequate herd health and production levels.
Collaborate with the Dairy department for quality control on a regular basis
Maintain relationships with external partners/vendors
Work with management to maintain target levels of total herd count and replacement and young stock count to meet the needs of our onsite dairy and maintain the acceptable cost levels to continue sustainable farming practices
Seasonal Field work when needed during planting/harvesting
Assist with minor building/equipment maintenance as needed
Cover extra shifts when needed for vacations or employee call outs.

Assist in the hiring & selection process of Farm staff
Address staff issues in a timely and direct manner
Effectively train Farm workers; provide ongoing positive and constructive feedback
Participate in weekly staff meetings; communicate information and cascade messages to Farm workers
Uphold safe work habits; ensure safety for cows, employees and customers at all times.

Qualifications

Strong understanding of dairy farming practices, including the care, nutrition and breeding of dairy farm cows
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to effectively communicate and delegate tasks.
Physical stamina to work long hours in various weather conditions
Ability to operate and maintain farm machinery, power tools, and other equipment.
Flexibility in schedule required as we operate
