Description

Squashington is a small, human-sized, certified-organic CSA and market farm in Mount Horeb, WI. We grow on about 4 acres, have ~160 CSA members, and attend the Dane County and Mount Horeb Farmers Markets.

We have several positions open right now (1 FT, 1-2 PT).

Field Crew assist with all aspects of farming. Lots of planting/weeding/harvesting, but also field prep, irrigating, trellising, seeding, planning, and more. FT position works Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday. PT positions work Monday and one other day.

Things to Expect:

  • Working in all weather conditions all the time
  • Standing, bending, squatting, lifting for hours at a time
  • Harvesting, washing, weeding, seeding, trellising, packing, sorting, animal husbandry, cleaning, organizing and more!
  • Taking verbal and visual instructions
  • Learning on the job and applying what you learned every day
  • Hard work. We won't lie- farming can be really hard physically and emotionally, but it is some of the most gratifying work too
  • Multitasking. So many things happen every day, and often times we need to be doing many things all at once. Being able to keep track of several things is extremely valuable.

Things We Expect

  • A full-season commitment. We understand life is unpredictable and for those who have never farmed before, it's hard to really imagine what to expect, but our small farm will depend on you. If a crew member chooses to leave mid-season, we will be left to scramble.
  • Motivation. Our days can be long, but we all need to keep up our pace, efficiency, and motivation throughout the day to get everything done that needs to get done. Having a "what's next?" attitude to keep the day rolling is essential.
  • A positive outlook. Being able to laugh it off, laugh at yourself, laugh at us. Not letting the little things get you down. Being able to take corrections without getting your feelings hurt. We do not expect everyone to be in a happy mood every day, but we do expect people have a sense of humor, want to get along with everyone, and yearn for a positive experience. We do really appreciate cynical people too.
  • Punctuality. Your day starts at 8:00am and ends at 5:30pm. Some days are shorter, and some days could be longer if you'd like to stay to help finish a task.

Compensation

  • We start at $15/hour
  • After a 6-week period, we will offer raises based on your work ethic
  • Full Veggie CSA
  • Access to lots of seconds produce
  • $100 gear stipend with receipts
  • Likely year-end bonus based on hours worked!

Farm or Business Description

Food is the reason we farm. We love it. Growing it, eating it, and giving it to those we love. It's an incredible job to have. Farming allows us to get outside everyday, use our minds critically and creatively, and gives us freedom to do what we want, and how we want to do it. As farmers, we literally reap what we sow. Our motivation yields bounty, while our short-comings equal loss. It is the definition of a learning process, and every year we learn more and more. We hope to always grow food for ourselves, our friends and family, and our community.  Squashington Farm focuses on healthy, sustainable gastronomical choices for our community. Gastroethics.

Growing on about 4 acres of certified-organic soil, we attend two farmers markets, have ~160 CSA members, and do a small amount of wholesale.
