Born in the US, however I spent my childhood summers traveling back to my family farm in the Lazio Region of Rome,Italy for harvest. It was both a Personal production farm (on the main plot) as well as commercial sale. Production of both animal, animal feed, and crops. Crop production consisted of grains, grapes, olives, legumes and potatoes, as well as small scale vegetables.
Our main crop was grape-for wine followed by olives-for oil.
A small percentage of “table crops” were for personal use and sale at local market, the balance sold in bulk for mass consumer use either in larger animal farming operations that didn’t produce their own or to product manufacture-I.e end user products.
After I married my wife was not pleased with the extended trips over the summer, and my career in health care didn’t afford me the opportunity to continue the long summer harvest times needed to assist starting in May with the hay crop and running through September/October for grapes and olives.
I have recently returned to San Marcos Ca and no longer have any desire to work in health care post pandemic.
While I know they are not my roots, there is something special about harvesting and farming that I just can’t break free from nor do I have any desire to.
