Farmer / Farm Worker (7451)

Full time Farm worker who is interested in working on a diversified farm growing vegetables, animal care and taking part in all activities on the farm.

Amaranth Acres is a diversified farm located on 33 acres in the agricultural reserve of Montgomery County, Maryland and in the DC metro area. We grow a wide variety of vegetables, including specialized South Asian vegetables, and are looking to add new varieties. We have pastured chickens for eggs and goats for meat. We practice rotational grazing in the pastures. We strive to improve soil health and utilize regenerative farming practices. We do not use any kind of chemicals or pesticides.

We have housing on the property and are interested in hiring someone willing to stay on the farm. The position is a good fit for someone interested in farming and working outside in all weather conditions.

This is a full-time position and is a position for someone considering farm work in the long term. If you are interested in Part Time hours contact us.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

• Daily feeding and care of the farm animals
• Cleaning the goat sheds daily and chicken coops once or twice a month
• Rotating the electric fence for the goats and chickens
• Ability to use small tools for maintenance, repair, painting, and upkeep of the farm infrastructure, like fences, trellises, and other farm structures. Work will include mowing, trimming, and grading
• Ability to use a tractor for farm work
• Seeding, transplanting, weeding, and all aspects of work related to vegetable growing, tree planting
• Harvesting. Packing and Sales of vegetables and other farm products
• Pruning of trees, assisting in farm tours, and cleaning of the farm buildings
• Maintaining and upkeep of all areas on the farm
• Working hours: vary depending on the season, animal care is daily, expect to work 40 - 50 hours per week, higher end during couple of months in the busy season, March – September. If part-time the hours will vary.

• Good work ethic, punctuality, and attention to detail
• Clear communication and comfortable in giving and receiving feedback and suggestions, and have no hesitation in clarifying details of work
• Patience and being careful with animals, tools, and equipment
• Prioritize tasks and work independently
• Ability to lift 50lbs of weight and work in all weather conditions (winter freezing weather and hot summer weather)
• Experience with using and maintaining power tools
• Animal care is a daily activity, taking care of them no matter what the weather, and commitment to their welfare is essential
• Farm work is unpredictable, so being able to switch tasks
• Commitment for a minimum of 1 year or more
• The working hours are longer during the peak growing season
• Optimistic attitude and a genuine interest in working on a farm and tackling the daily chores of a farm
•  a valid driver's license is required

• 1+ years of farm experience or 1+ year of livestock care
• we are willing to consider someone with no experience but is willing to learn
