Description
We are looking for a female horse trainer to live on site that is a US citizen seeking a long term permanent position. She needs to have started and trained multiple numbers of colts to be ridden. All horses on our property have been born here and have been sired by stallions that have produced at least one million dollars in cutting, reining, or working cowhorse events. Our training philosophy emphasizes methods where trainer and horse can work together as willing, responsive partners. We do not board nor train outside horses. We have recently started to use four of our own stallions to breed our mares. These stallions are taken off site to be bred so we have no breeding of horses at our facility.
Farm or Business Description
Our facility is unique in that the road which runs in the front of the property is within walking distance of Walmart, Home Depot, Chili's, Olive Garden, several urgent care medical centers, Starbucks, and more. Though we only own 40 acres, we have access to 1000's of acres, as we frequently use our horses to help the neighbor who owns the adjoining cattle pastures with his cattle.
Our current staff includes young adults who have worked for us for over 3 years, are in charge of taking care of the horses, and are eager to learn more about horse care and training.
For the past ten years we have worked with young adults with learning disabilities who come weekly with one of their coaches to learn the benefits of having a job in the equine industry. We have hired several of the graduates of that program.
The website given in this application is very outdated but does give an idea of our facilities.
Responsibilities
Most of our horses are finished reining, roping, or trail horses. We have about 10 horses that need to be started or finished. Since the current staff wants to learn more about horses and their training, they should be available to help, saddle, ground work, etc.
Four of the ten horses that need to be worked with are the stallions. Though they have all been ridden our current staff only does ground work with them. We believe the more they can be ridden and hauled places the better horse they become.
Qualifications
The trainer needs to have started many, many colts by herself. In other words starting one colt in a supervised school environment doesn't count as knowing how to start a colt. The trainer should be a mentor not a person who gives one of the staff members a new task and doesn't pay any attention to whether or not they know how to do the task
The trainer should be experienced in foaling and what to do if there are complications during labor, birth, and the normal progression during the first few months of life.
Experience Requirements
As stated above, the trainer needs to have started many, many colts by herself. The trainer should have a strong background and experience in understanding stallion behavior, mare behavior, gelding behavior, and pony behavior. The trainer should be familiar with foaling out mares.
Educational Requirements
No formal degree is required but reference from at least 3 horse related individuals will be required.
Benefits
On-site housing with all utilities & WIFI; lot of willing help; base salary with aggressive incentive program to increase the base.
Brigadoon Farm is an equal opportunity employer.
