Description
We are seeking an experienced, dependable, and self-motivated Farm, Grounds & Property Caretaker to provide hands-on care for the grounds, gardens, greenhouse, landscaping, equipment, and facilities associated with a private family property and two nearby rental properties.
This position is centered around landscaping, gardening, greenhouse operations, irrigation, groundskeeping, equipment operation, and general property maintenance. The successful candidate will spend much of their time working outdoors and personally performing the work necessary to keep the properties attractive, healthy, organized, and well maintained throughout the year.
The property includes landscaped grounds, lawn areas, gardens, a greenhouse, orchard areas, irrigation systems, and a variety of lawn, landscape, and property-maintenance equipment.
In addition to grounds and agricultural work, the position includes routine building maintenance and repairs, equipment care, seasonal projects, and coordination with outside contractors when specialized work is required.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with their hands, takes pride in maintaining land and property, notices what needs attention without waiting to be told, and is interested in a stable, long-term position.
Farm or Business Description
Small farm and greenhouse operation, 2 rental properties, owner's primary residence
Responsibilities
Grounds, Landscaping & Irrigation
- Maintain lawns and landscaping at the two rental properties, including mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizing, weed control, and seasonal cleanup.
- Assist with the care and upkeep of the grounds at the primary residence and monitor outside landscape contractors.
- Maintain flower beds, shrubs, trees, gardens, orchard areas, and other landscaped areas.
- Monitor plant and turf health and identify irrigation, pest, disease, weed, or maintenance issues.
- Operate, inspect, adjust, and perform routine maintenance on irrigation systems.
- Plant, prune, fertilize, mulch, weed, and perform other routine landscape and garden work.
- Maintain attractive, healthy, and orderly grounds throughout the growing season.
- Recommend practical improvements to landscaping, irrigation, gardens, and grounds.
Greenhouse, Garden & Growing Operations
- Operate and maintain the greenhouse.
- Start plants from seeds and transplants as appropriate.
- Assist with planning and planting seasonal flowers, vegetables, and other plants.
- Water, fertilize, prune, stake, and maintain greenhouse and garden plants.
- Monitor plants for pests, disease, nutrient deficiencies, and irrigation problems.
- Harvest vegetables, flowers, fruit, and other garden products.
- Maintain garden beds and orchard areas throughout the growing season.
- Prepare greenhouse and garden areas for seasonal changes.
Equipment & Property Maintenance
- Operate and maintain lawn mowers, tractors, trailers, power tools, landscape equipment, and other property equipment.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Keep tools, equipment, supplies, garages, workshops, and storage areas clean and organized.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on homes, garages, outbuildings, fences, gates, lighting, irrigation systems, and related facilities.
- Identify maintenance issues early and address them when practical.
- Coordinate qualified contractors for repairs or projects requiring specialized expertise.
Seasonal Responsibilities
- Assist with and coordinate snow removal from driveways, sidewalks, walkways, and entrances.
- Winterize irrigation systems, equipment, gardens, and other outdoor facilities.
- Prepare properties and grounds for changing seasons and significant weather events.
- Perform spring and fall property and landscape cleanup.
- Assist with installing, removing, and storing seasonal and holiday decorations.
- Help prepare outdoor areas and properties for occasional family gatherings and events.
Vehicles & General Property Support
- Keep designated family vehicles clean, fueled, maintained, and ready for use.
- Schedule vehicle service and maintain basic maintenance records.
- Conduct regular property inspections and identify maintenance or safety concerns.
- Keep the properties, garages, storage areas, and work areas clean and organized.
- Maintain basic records for equipment service, repairs, warranties, and recurring maintenance.
- Occasionally assist with deliveries, equipment movement, facility projects, inventory organization, or other property-related needs.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Personal Characteristics
The ideal candidate enjoys outdoor, hands-on work and has practical experience caring for landscaping, gardens, agricultural property, or similar grounds.
Candidates should be:
- Experienced with landscaping, groundskeeping, gardening, farming, or similar outdoor work.
- Knowledgeable about irrigation systems and general plant care.
- Comfortable operating lawn, landscape, and property-maintenance equipment.
- Mechanically inclined and capable of performing routine maintenance and minor repairs.
- Dependable, observant, organized, and able to work independently.
- Self-motivated and able to identify and complete work without constant supervision.
- Honest, discreet, professional, and respectful of a private family environment.
- Physically capable of lifting, climbing, bending, operating equipment, and working outdoors throughout the year.
- Willing to adjust schedules occasionally for weather, seasonal work, or special projects.
Experience Requirements
Preferred Experience
- 3+ years of experience in landscaping, farming, ranching, groundskeeping, greenhouse operations, property maintenance, or a related field.
- Greenhouse, vegetable gardening, flower gardening, or orchard experience.
- Irrigation system operation, troubleshooting, and repair experience.
- Experience operating tractors, lawn equipment, trailers, and power tools.
- Basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repair skills.
- Experience maintaining larger residential, agricultural, ranch, or similar properties.
- English/Spanish bilingual skills are preferred because the position regularly communicates with contractors and vendors.
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
Educational Requirements
Prefer HS diploma at minimum and preferably a bachelors degree in a related field
